One of the biggest changes in the guidelines implemented in 2005 was to move from 15 compressions2 breaths 152 to 302. To achieve the best compression rate and decrease the frequency of compression interruptions the AHAs new guidelines instruct practitioners to adopt a universal compression-ventilation ratio of 302 for all one-rescuer or two-rescuer CPR for adults. Experts believe this new ratio will simplify one- or two-rescuer CPR training for adults in addition to lay rescuer resuscitation.
Practitioners should use the. If alone start high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR at a compressions-to-breaths ratio of 302. If not alone start high-quality CPR at a compressions-to-breaths ratio of 152.
High-quality CPR and changing rescuers every 2 minutes improves a victims chance of survival. The Compression to Ventilation Ratio is the number of chest compressions given followed by the numbers of ventilation breaths given while performing CPR. A compression to ventilation ratio of 302 means you should give 30 chest compressions followed by 2 ventilation breaths.
This is the rate or speed of compressions per minute. A rate of 100minute means the. 302 - The correct guidance post-2005 152 - The guidance pre-2005 These guidelines are reviewed every five years which is part of the reason that first aid certificates usually expire after about 3 years.
The most recent guidelines have a focus. The old standard of 15 compressions and 2 breaths was changed to 30 compressions to 2 breaths. The American Heart Association adopted the recommended changes also.
Some of the reasons for changing included making it easier for one person to perform CPR. It also created less interruptions to blood flow which maintained blood pressure longer. In this video we will demonstrate how to perform 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths.

There were no significant differences in the quality of CPR performance or measurement of fatigue.
Significantly more compressions per minute were delivered with 302 in both the animal and human studies. If we compare 30 chest compressions with 15 chest compressions less then 28 s is spent for chest compressions while 15 are recommended in 1 min of CPR. If the number of breaths increases in a cycle less than 26 s is spent for chest compressions.
The most effective of circulatory support occurs if 30 chest compressions are performed in one cycleCummins RO Chamberlain DA. In a canine model of witnessed VF using a simulated scenario CPR with three CV ratios 151 152 and 302 did not result in any differences in hemodynamics arterial oxygen profiles and resuscitation outcome among the three groups. CPR with a CV ratio of 151 provided comparable chest compressions and shorter pauses for ventilation between each cycle compared to a CV ratio of 30.
A more accurate title would be. Continuous Chest Compressions vs. 302 Does it Matter.

The point at least from my perspective is that poorly performed 302 is probably not as good as continuous chest compressions whether you include 101 upstroke. If you are on your own you should perform 30 compressions followed by two rescue breaths and repeat this cycle until the emergency team arrive. If there are two of you or more the rescue breaths can be given over the top of the compressions with two breaths being given every 15 compressions.
